The Venture Center (VC) is the trademark of Entrepreneurship Development Center, a not-for-profit company hosted by the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, India. The Center is a technology business incubator specializing in technology startups offering products and services exploiting scientific expertise in the areas of materials, chemicals and biological sciences & engineering.

Business Situation

Due to the diverse nature of its work, VC hires employees from different backgrounds and in different types of employment like permanent hires, volunteers, trainees, and consultants.

With varying HR policies for different set of professionals, the management’s time spent on addressing employee queries and grievances was considerably high. The management felt the need to carry out a complete review of HR policies to ensure relevance and alignment to VC’s HR philosophy.

It was felt that a performance management scheme that is closely linked with the Organizational goals and perceived as fair by the employees needs to be developed.

The Challenge

During initial diagnosis, PeopleWiz consultants realized that Venture Center had a positive work environment that celebrated learning and sharing of knowledge. Structural clarity, role clarity and development of middle management layer were needed to ensure that the organization continues to support the strategic objectives.

The challenge was to retain the positive atmosphere and yet create a performance culture that differentiated performance and rewarded results. Clear linkage of performance assessment to salary increments and incentive mechanism was needed. The policies had to be designed, articulated and communicated in a way that the employees perceived them as fair and just.

The Solution

  • HR Process Design: PeopleWiz‘s approach was to work closely with the employees aswell as management to analyze current HR processes and evaluate their effectiveness and ease of implementation. Best practices in Employee development, rewards, compensation and benefits that were suitable for a mid sized not-for-profit organization were studied and adapted for Venture Center. With an objective to deploy scalable HR processes, PeopleWiz Consulting crafted the basic framework of policies supporting the new organization structure. Extensive employee communication was planned and carried out to share the newly crafted policies, address queries and incorporate any employee feedback.
  • Performance Culture: To strengthen the performance driven culture, PeopleWizdesigned Performance Management System that linked individual goals to organizational goals. Incentive scheme based on achievement of individual and organizational goals has been created that provides a direct link between organization’s performance and incentive payouts. Goal setting, feedback and review process has been defined. Goal setting was also carried out for all the key positions in the organization.
